Five Minutes With Bob
Today, I woke up feeling grateful for a stranger. Years ago, I had just moved to a new city for work. New apartment. New office. New faces. From the outside, everything looked exciting. On the inside, I was lonely. Have you ever noticed something curious? Sometimes the bigger the crowd, the lonelier you feel. I attended office parties, apartment gatherings, weekend events... yet somehow I always came home feeling like I hadn't truly met anyone. I kept wondering: "How do people make genuine friends so effortlessly?" Then one evening, while watching television, I heard a professional speaker say something that stayed with me: "Don't chase butterflies with a net. Build a garden, and the butterflies will come." At first, I dismissed it as one of those nice-sounding motivational quotes. But months later, it finally clicked. He wasn't talking about butterflies. He was talking about people. Most of us spend our lives wondering: "How do I find better friends?" Perhaps we're asking the wrong question. Maybe the better question is: "Am I becoming the kind of friend I would love to have?" That realization quietly changed my life. Instead of trying to impress people, I began working on myself. I listened more than I spoke. I smiled more often. I remembered people's names. I became genuinely curious about their stories. I laughed more. I judged less. I learned that good hygiene, good manners and being dependable are surprisingly attractive qualities. Most importantly, I stopped asking, "Who will be there for me?" and started asking, "Whose day can I make a little better today?" Slowly but surely, wonderful people entered my life. Some became close friends. Some became lifelong friends. And I often think back to that anonymous speaker who unknowingly altered the direction of my life. Whoever you are... Thank you. One thought before we part... If your heart were a garden, what would people find growing there today? Send me some flowers! Until tomorrow, Bob
