Five Minutes with Bob
All mornings

Good Morning 😀

This morning, over my usual cup of coffee, I found myself remembering something my psychology teacher once said. “Never outsource your happiness.” Back then, I barely understood what she meant. It sounded like one of those clever phrases teachers like to leave you with. Years later, I finally understood. A colleague of mine seemed to have a difficult day almost every day. Someone didn’t return her call. Her sister said something hurtful. A meeting didn’t go well. Her assistant made a mistake. Each incident decided how she felt for the rest of the day. That’s when I realized something. When we allow other people’s words, moods, or actions to dictate our own emotional state, we’re quietly handing over the steering wheel of our lives. We can’t control how others behave. But we can decide how much influence we give them. That, perhaps, is what my teacher meant. Don’t build your happiness on things you don’t control. Build it on something no one else can take away. Do you relate with this concept? As you enjoy your morning cup of coffee today, ask yourself: Who or what has the biggest influence over your mood? And if the answer isn’t you, what small step could you take today to change that? Until tomorrow, Bob
