My First Best Friend

This morning, an old photograph quietly interrupted my day. There he was. Fred. No special occasion. No dramatic story. Just two eight-year-old boys standing side by side, smiling as though the world could never separate them. His family had just moved into our town. Within weeks we had become inseparable. We shared lunches without asking, argued over games we had forgotten by sunset, and somehow always ended up sitting beside each other. Looking at that photograph today, I found myself wondering something I had never really asked before. What actually makes someone become our first best friend? It probably isn't because they are the smartest, funniest, or most successful person we ever meet. Perhaps it is because childhood friendships are formed before life teaches us to measure people. Children don't ask, "What do you do?" "Where do you live?" "How successful are you?" They simply ask, "Do you want to play?" Anthropologists often point out that humans survived not because we were the strongest species, but because we formed close social bonds which is why friendship is one of humanity's oldest survival technologies. Maybe that is why those first friendships still feel different decades later. They remind us of who we were before we became busy becoming who we are. As adults, making new friends somehow feels more complicated. We edit our words. We become careful. We wonder whether we'll be judged. Yet every lasting friendship, whether it begins at five or fifty, still starts the same way. One conversation. One shared laugh. One unexpected moment of kindness. Perhaps making new friends has not become harder. Perhaps we've simply become more cautious. And if life has recently introduced someone new, neighbour, a colleague or the person who always remembers your coffee order, perhaps your next lifelong friend is someone you already see every week. We rarely recognize the beginning of an important friendship while we're living it. Usually, we only recognize it years later... in an old photograph. So before your day gathers speed, let me leave you with today's thought. Who is the person you met by complete accident... that quietly changed the story of your life? I'd genuinely love to read your answer. Have a wonderful day. Bob
