Why This Book, Why Now?

It was summer of 2022, when my aunt Helen gave me a book. It sat on my shelf for 2 years, quiet and patient. Yesterday was my last date with it. And the moment I finished it, one question came to mind: "How did this book know I needed this?" It is a strange feeling. You may have had the book for years. Perhaps someone recommended it long ago. Maybe it was sitting quietly on a shelf, unread and unnoticed. And then one day, out of curiosity you pick it up, read a few lines. And suddenly, it feels as though someone has turned on a light in a room you had been sitting in for quite some time. That is one of the great gifts of books. They give us something life cannot always give us on it's own: a new perpective towards life. We still have problems, still misunderstood situations, even ourselves. But this time we also have clarity and wisdom that we got from the book. That is the remarkable things about books. They allow one human being to sit down with another human being across time, distance, culture and circumstance. Neither you have to meet them, nor you need to be born in the same century. You simply need to be ready to listen. I have often wondered whether we find the right book at the right time. It wasn't the book that was different this time. It was us. The same sentence that means nothing to us at 25 can stop us in our tracks at 45. A book someone gave us years ago can suddenly become the book we desparately needed today. And perhaps that is true of people too. Sometimes someone gives us advice and we aren't ready to hear it. Sometimes a friend tells us something we need to know, but we brush it aside. Sometimes life has to take us through a few more turns before we finally understand what they were trying to say. And then, one day, the right words arrive. Perhaps in a conversation, or in a song, or in a book. When we are ready, the answer has a curious way of presenting itself. And maybe the book isn't meant for you alone. Maybe you were meant to discover it so that you could pass it's perspective on. Sometimes all it takes is: "I read this and thought of you." That's it. That's enough. So today, if a person comes to mind while reading this, don;t dismiss the thought too quickly. There maybe a reason they appeared in your mind. Because someties one small nudge becomes the beginning of something neither of you expected. And sometimes, without knowing it, we become the person who helps someone else find the perspective they were ready to receive. What book found you when you were ready for it? Or was the book meant for someone else? Keep reading. Bob

Some books really do come into our lives at strange times. For me it was Alchemist, by Paul Coelho.

I hope you don’t mind me asking this, but is it you writing these articles, or are you taking some help from AI? Either way, the writing has a warmth and personal touch that is becoming more noticeable with every piece. Keep writing, my son, your articles are getting better day by day.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my article and share your thoughts. I truly appreciate it. I don’t use AI for my writing; I try to choose my words very carefully and put my own thoughts into every article I write. Knowing that this comes through in the writing means a lot to me. Thank you again for the encouragement. I’ll certainly keep writing and trying to get better. Regards, Bob
