Training Your Inner Voice.
I recently read somewhere that to be really good at something, you have to have a good relationship with your inner voice. Most of us assume greatness comes down to More practice. More discipline. More hours. More determination. And, of course, all of it, is true. But somewhere along the way, another player quietly enters the game. The voice inside your head. The quiet one that says, keep going. Or, you are not good enough. Try again. What’s the point? You can do this! That voice has been playing alongside you for years. The interesting question is: How did it learn? Most successful folks know: When to rush. To hesitate, show impatience and where to press harder. And this is where, perhaps, where training our inner voice comes in, to execute the above and more importantly, when things don't go your way. As human beings, we spend years training our bodies, sharpening our minds and building professional skills. But we rarely notice that we are also training the voice that accompanies us through all of it. Every time we tell ourselves, *I can't do this**,* the voice gets a little more familiar. Every time we say, Let us try once more, it learns something else. Every time we recover from a mistake without turning it into a verdict about ourselves, we teach it a different language. Maybe the inner voice isn't something we simply have. Maybe, in small ways, it is something we build. And perhaps that explains why two people can face almost the same setback and walk away feeling completely different. The event was the same. The conversation inside them wasn't. A Little Thought To Carry Today Think about something you're trying to become better at. Your work, health, parenting, a partner Now, set aside goals for a moment. Instead, listen for the voice that appears when you aren't doing very well. What does it usually sound like? And what does it say when you do something well? Sometimes the most important relationship we are building isn't the one everyone else can see. It's the one that follows us home. So, what is your take on this, Do you listen to your inner voice? Do you think training it will help? I would be curious to know. Have a great weekend, Bob.
